GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE
European Union defines Landscape Infrastructure as the “Spatial infrastructure of natural and semi-natural areas, as well as other environmental features that allow citizens to benefit from its multiple benefits.” The principle underlying on Green Infrastructure is that every place can offer higher benefits if the ecosystems are in a healthy state.
Investment on Green Infrastructure is mainly characterized by a high yield return on time, providing job opportunities, profitable alternative or complementary to grey infrastructure and a change of intensive land use models, benefiting both habitats and people. Civil infrastructures, understood as a frame of networks and systems needed to provide services and support economic and social activities, have led to a great fragmentation of the environment, the landscape and territory.
Landscape architects strongly stand for the need of establishing new approaches of work towards the conception and implementation of civil infrastructure, through a global vision that goes further beyond the mainstream and typical actions for mitigation and minimizing the environmental and landscape impacts: this can be solved through the use and implementation of green infrastructure.
