GREEN/BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE
Landscape architects play an important role on designing spaces considering proper water management, in all phases, considering water as a resource, as an effluent or as a source or end for pollutants:
• Adopting good practices on water management from site works to life-use management.
• Implementing Sustainable Drainage Systems on which reuse, and recycling is a priority.
• Prioritizing environmentally friendly construction solutions.
• Adopting design and management decisions that help preventing damage caused by flooding or runoff.
Bio-engineering (blue-green solutions) provide landscape architects with tools that help implement sustainable designs.
It is time to think that a buried pipe is not the best (and only) option to evacuate water runoff. Landscape architects need to demonstrate the economic benefits obtained using bioengineering in order to solve problems, and the advantages that will impact on citizens and managers.
When planning new spaces for habitable neighbourhoods, we need to consider the multiple benefits that can be obtained through a sustainable: attractive places, higher biodiversity, better water quality, better public health and higher real-estate value.
